Military Service

Private in Company C of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the first regiment in the United States to enlist men of color during the Civil War. Enlisted on 27 March 1863 from Montrose, Pennsylvania. He was about 25 years old, married and working as a musician when he enlisted. Mustered out 20 August 1865 with his regiment.

Death

He passed away in 1882 due to phthisis (probably tuberculosis) and is buried at Rainsford Island Cemetery in Boston, Massachusetts.
