Family listed on page 166 of the Kulberg Reports.
Family #1 in the 1767 Grimm census.
Family #92 in the 1798 Grimm census.
Just "Jost" Erdmann was born about 1729 in the Darmstadt, Germany area.
According to the Kulberg reports, Just Erdmann was a Lutheran farmer from Darmstadt, traveling with his wife Anna, and their children: [1]
They traveled on document number 2376, departing from Luebeck by the Pink "Lev" and arriving in Kronstadt on 22 July 1766.[1] The ship was under the command of Lieutenant Fyodor Fyodorov. [1]
Also listed on the two open pages, 166-167, of the Kulberg Reports in close proximity to Just Erdman's name are 11 other families who ended up in Grimm, Russia. These families include:[1]
New German immigrants were moved to temporary quarters in Oranienbaum, where they remained for about a year before moving to their final destinations in the Volga region. In a significant number of cases, their first destination was not their final destination.
Jost Erdmann is mentioned in the 1767 Grimm census as a Lutheran Craftsman from Darmstadt. He lived with his wife Anna, born 1740, and children Daniel, age 12, and Elisabeth, age 16. The absence of Johannes and Catharina suggests that those two children did not survive the journey from Oranienbaum to the Volga region.
1767 Grimm Census Entry for Jost and Anna Erdmann
[2]
This census also shows that Anna Erdmann was too young to be the mother of Daniel and Elisabeth Erdmann. The fact that she is listed in the Kulberg Reports suggests that Jost's first wife died in Germany and he remarried before immigrating to Russia.
Although no Erdmanns appear in the 1775 census, they were probably inadvertently excluded, as did happen from time to time. There are several Erdmanns in the 1798 census for Grimm. Specifically, there is a Just Erdmann, family #92, and Daniel Erdmann, family #118. These two are nearly an exact match for the Just and Johann Daniel Erdmann in the Kulberg reports and the 1767 census. Johann Daniel was 11 years old in 1766, making his birth year about 1755. Daniel Erdmann in the 1798 census lists his age at 69, making his birth year 1754. With small variances for the times of the year when the report and census were recorded, they are statistical matches.
One additional note to consider: The Nikolaus Heimbuch which included his wife Anna Katharina Seibel and her two younger siblings also does not appear in the 1775 Grimm census. I am going through each of these families now to see if there are any others like see. Perhaps there is a pattern that can help show what happened and/or why they are missing from the 1775 census.
1798 Grimm Census
[3]
Daniel Erdmann's son, Johann Peter, was 20 at the time of the 1798 census, making his birth year 1778. His wife, Christina Bauer, also 20, was from the village of Scherbakovka. She was probably the daughter of Georg Friedrich Bauer, born in Germany in 1751, who was unmarried at the time of the 1765 Scherbakovka census and living with his parents Melchior and Anna Elisabeth Bauer. By 1778, Georg Friedrich Bauer would have been 27 years old, probably married with at least one child, daughter Christina, born that year.
Just Erdmann died before 1834 in Grimm, Russia. Had he survived, he would have been more than 100 years old.
