Baruch Espinosa (Bento Espinosa, aka Benedictus Spinoza) was a Dutch philosopher of Portuguese Sephardic Jewish origin. He was born on November 24, 1632 in Jodenbuurt, Amsterdam, Netherlands. His parents were Miguel Espinosa and Ana Debora Senior.

To be named "the 'prince' of philosophers" (Quoted in the translator's preface of Deleuze's Expressionism in Philosophy: Spinoza (1990))[1],

He died on February 21, 1677 in The Hague, Holland, Netherlands, at the age of 44 in 1677 from a lung illness, perhaps tuberculosis or silicosis exacerbated by the inhalation of fine glass dust while grinding lenses.[1]

Names of Spinoza:

In the herem (excommunication and expulsion from the Portuguese Jewish community of Amsterdam) on 1656-7-27 he is named "Baruch Espinoza" and "Baruch de Espinoza" [1][2] In the tax records ("finta", "imposta" and "promessas") of the years 1654 and 1655 his name is written as "Baruch deespinoza"[4], "Baruch Deespinosa"[5][6], "Baruch espinoza"[7] and "Baruch Espinosa"[?].

On 1655-5-21 he signed, by his own hand, "Bento despinoza" in a notary record (testesfied with Isaac da Costa and Manuel Lavelo that "Elias da Paz" or "Simão Barbosa Homem" or "Simão Dias Nunes" were alias of the same person.[3]
