He married, age 22, on 1 May 1889, Norfolk, Ontario, to ALMA GARLAND, 22, in her parents' home[1]

William was a blacksmith at Simcoe for 22 years. Later engaged in the insurance business. He and Alma resided at Simcoe, where Wm. took a leading part in the community. Served on both the Simcoe Town Council and Norfolk Board of Education.

He became widely known for this fruit growing operation. His orchards south of Simcoe on Hwy 24 were models of husbandry and attracted widespread admiration from other fruit growers and the general public. Wm. was the president of the Norfolk Agricultural Soceity for ten years; for several years was Director and President of the Norfolk Fruit Growers' Associaton. Active in Masonry. He was the oldest Past Master of the Norfolk Lodge (No. 10), A.F.& A.M., and a Life Member of that lodge, as well as Ezra Chapter No. 23, Royal Arch Masons.
