In 1868, Samuel made a claim for $115.37 for damage to his personal property caused by the “defence in the war to suppress the Rebellion.” He claimed damages for his corn, oats and rye crops that were carried off, for the loss of 2 heifers and 1 bull that were led off, and assorted whips, collars, halters, etc. that were carried off.
