Nicholas Fain was born in Ireland circa 1730. His ancestors had fled persecution in France in the late 1600s.
Nicholas married Elizabeth Taylor about 1752. They emigrated to Pennsylvania and settled in Chester County where their children were born. They had seven sons and one daughter:

Oct 23, 1782, Washington Co, North Carolina (Pre-state TN), North Carolina Land Grant#87, 400 Acres on a branch of the Little Limestone[2]
Oct 24, 1782, Washington Co, North Carolina (Pre-state TN), North Carolina Land Grant#104, 200 Acres on a branch of the Little Limestone next to #87. Adjacent to:Jacob Wamick, Abendnego Inman. 50 Shillings per 100 acres.[3]
