OBITUARY. DEATH OF ME. F. FAIRBAIRN. At his home in Walsh street, South Yarra, the death of Mr. Frederick William Fairbairn occurred yesterday. He was aged 59 years. Mr. Fairbairn, who had been in ill health for some time, was the youngest son of the late Mr. George Fairbairn, one of the earliest settlers in the Western district of Victoria, and whose sons were Mr. George Fairbairn, now Agent-General for Victoria, Mr. Stephen Fairbairn, who is regarded as one of the best rowing coaches in England, and Messrs. Charles, Thomas, and Frederick Fairbairn.

Mr. Frederick Fairbairn was educated at Geelong Church of England Grammar School, where he gained distinction particularly in all branches of sport. He represented the school in combined sports in 1880, and two years later was champion of the school. He was a leading figure on the football and cricket fields, and rowed in the Geelong Grammar School crew in 1882, when that school became "Head of the River," and won the Robertson Cup, and in 1883 and 1884. He also rowed in the Cambridge trials when attending that University on the completion of his education in Australia. Taking a keen interest in racing, he was a member of the committee of the Victoria Racing Club.

Like his father and other members of the family Mr. Fairbairn devoted himself to pastoral pursuits, and some time ago acquired Logan Downs station in Queensland. He married Miss Rhoda Jane McLeod, and leaves two daughters and one son, Mr. G. A. Fairbairn, who has also established himself as a keen sportsman, his special interests being rowing and cricket. He has been regarded as one of the best amateur cricketers of his time in England.

Mr. Fairbairn's body will be cremated at the necropolis, Springvale, on Tuesday. A. A. Sleight Ply. Ltd. have charge of the arrangements.

Death of Spouse: 21 Jun 1949, 8 Jackson street, Toorak, Victoria, Australia

An amusing snippet for the family:

The LegalGenealogist, Judy Russell has blogged about an update to the PERSI search interface at the Allen Public Library https://www.legalgenealogist.com/2022/01/13/snippet-a-new-persi-portal/

I could not resist then doing a surname search for Fairbairn (I'm registered with the Guild of One Name Studies for the surname and volunteer admin for the Fairbairn Surname DNA project at FTDNA) and noted this among the indexed periodicals:

“Report on Mrs. F. W. Fairbairn ball, complaints about the tango, 1913” in issue 80 ( Jun 2006) of the Central Queensland Fam Hist Assoc. of Frenchville, Queensland, Australia
