OBITUARY. STEVE FAIRBAIRN DEAD. Famous Rowing Coach. THE death is announced in London of Mr Stephen Fairbairn, the world's greatest authority on rowing, and the originator of the Fairbairn style. A champion in his day in practically every branch of sport, Steve Fairbairn was born in Australia 76 years ago. He was educated at Geelong Grammar School, and while still in his 'teens played first-class cricket and football. Later, he went to Cambridge to study law, and for four years he rowed for his University against Oxford. He was admitted to the Bar and was appointed to the directorate of Dalgety and Co., but sport claimed most of his time. As rowing coach for Cambridge he originated the style which bears his name. His Rowing Notes, A. B.C. and Rowing Annual are the recognised manuals of the sport. He leaves a widow and two sons.
