Biography

Leanna was born in 1812[1] in South Carolina.[2][3]

She married Sampson Cates[2] and the couple had the following known children:

  1. William Cates was born about 1828 in South Carolina.[2]
  2. Polly Cates was born about 1830 in South Carolina.[2]
  3. Wiley Cates was born about 1832 in South Carolina.[2]
  4. Sampson Cates was born about 1832 in South Carolina.[2]
  5. Philip Cates was born about 1835 in South Carolina.[2]
  6. Leanna Cates was born about 1838 in South Carolina.[2]
  7. Hiram Cates was born about 1841 in South Carolina.[2][3]
  8. Jincy Cates was born about 1844 in South Carolina.[2][3]
  9. Sarah Cates was born about 1847 in South Carolina.[2][3]
  10. John Cates was born about 1852 in South Carolina.[3]

Leanna and Sampson left South Carolina sometime after 1852, possibly with her brother Jordan Feaster and his family as they all ended up in Monroe County, Alabama by the 1860 census.[3] The 1866 state census for Alabama shows Leanna and her brother's family both in Township 11 of Monroe County, Alabama.[4] Leanna's household consisted at that time of the following persons, persumably her youngest two children, Sarah and John:

males)10-20:1
females)10-20:1 ; 40-50:1[4]

In 1870, Leanna appears on the census at Dennard's Bluff, Monroe County, Alabama, as living next door to her brother Jordan and his family, and her children Sarah and John are living with her as is her daughter Jincy and her 2 young sons.[5] Sometime after the 1870 census Leanna apparently moved to Texas.[1]

Leanna died in 1878 and is buried in Dougherty Cemetery, Dougherty, Rains County, Texas.[1]
