He had ten siblings, namely: Jane, Sarah, Amelia, Charles Thomas, Elizabeth, George Matthew, Joseph William, Mary Ann, Hannah, and Jessie.
When he was 22, he married Mary Wright,daughter of John Wright and Phoebe Clark, on 24 Jul 1866 in Wollombi, New South Wales, Australia.

He spent his early life at St. Alban's, where he was a farmer. In those pioneering days the market was in Sydney and regularly Mr. Fernance took his produce to the market there. Poultry, eggs, tobacco, bacon, etc., were the chief products. He grew maize and wheat. The latter was ground into flour at the district mill.
For many years he ran his farm and grazing property on the old Sydney
road. From this property he retired some eighteen years ago and came to
Cessnock to reside. For some years before he died he lived with his daughter, Mrs. E. A. Sternbeck, of View-street, Cessnock.[1]
He was 97 when he died on 23 Oct 1940 in Cessnock, New South Wales, Australia. John was buried in Cessnock Cemetery, Cessnock, Cessnock City, New South Wales[2]. Before he died he was the oldest residents of the Cessnock District[1]
