Research Notes

Douglas Richardson posted the following on soc.genelogy.medieval on 4 Oct 2014:

Complete Peerage 5 (1926): 317-319 (sub Ferrers) has a good account of Sir Edmund Ferrers, of Chartley, Staffordshire, usually called Lord Ferrers of Chartley, who died in 1435.

The following information is given regarding the marriage of Sir Edmund Ferrers: "He married Ellen, 2nd daughter and coh. of Thomas Roche, of Castle Bromwich, co. Warwick, by Elizabeth, daughter and h. of Sir Thomas Birmingham, and niece and h. of Sir John Birmingham, of Birmingham, co. Warwick, Kingston Bagpuze, Berks, etc. They had livery of that portion of her inheritance which Elizabeth Lady Clinton, formerly wife of the said Sir John Birmingham, had held in dower or otherwise, 1 Dec. 1423." END OF QUOTE.

In footnote f on page 318 the inquisition post mortem of Elizabeth Lady Clinton is quoted at length and it supplies ample proof as to the maiden name and parentage of Ellen [de la] Roche, wife of Sir Edmund Ferrers.

No date is given by Complete Peerage for the marriage of Edmund Ferrers and Ellen [de la] Roche. However, the marriage evidently took some years before 1423, as Complete Peerage indicates that Edmund and Ellen's son and heir, William Ferrers, was aged 23 in 1435, or born about 1412.

Recently I came across a record which proves that Edmund Ferrers and Ellen [de la] Roche were married by 5 July 1410. The record is found in B.H.J. Hughes, Jottings and Historical Records on the History of South Pembrokeshire, Volume 3 (2000), which source is available online at the following weblink: [dead link], captured by archive.org here.

Mr. Hughes includes the presentation of the church of Talbenny, Pembrokeshire dated 1410 in his work. He doesn't cite a source for this record, but it appears to be taken from an episcopal register. The following is a transcript of this record:

"Date: 1410, 5 July.

On 5 July in the same year, at Haverford, the same admitted Sir Thomas Eynon, priest, to the church of TALBENNY of the diocese of St. David's, vacant by the death of Sir Thomas Heche last rector of the same, and in the gift of Elizabeth late wife of Thomas Roche in right of dower, [and] Edmund Ferreres and George Longevile in right of their wives, daughters and heirs of Thomas Roche aforesaid; and instituted him etc." END OF QUOTE.

As stated above, the above record proves that Edmund Ferrers and his wife, Ellen [de la] Roche, were married by 5 July 1410.

For interest's sake, the following is a list of the 17th Century New World immigrants that descend from Sir Edmund Ferrers and his wife, Ellen [de la] Roche:

Robert Abell, Thomas Booth, Elizabeth Bosvile, George, Giles & Robert Brent, Frances, Jane & Katherine Deighton, Edward Foliot, Thomas Ligon, Nathaniel Littleton, Amy Wyllys.
