Biography

Margaret, Countess of Warwick[1]

Margaret de Ferrers, daughter of William de Ferrers, Knt., 3rd Lord Ferrers of Groby, and his wife Margaret de Ufford,[2] married Thomas Beauchamp, K.G., before April 1381.[1]
She and Thomas had only one son, Richard,[3] and two daughters, Katherine and Margaret.[1]
  • Son Richard Beauchamp, K.G., K.B.,13th Earl of Warwick, born January 1381/2, married Elizabeth Berkeley (daughter of Thomas Berkeley and his wife, Margaret, daughter of Warin de Lisle).[4]
Sir Thomas died 8 April 1401.[5] His widow Margaret died 22 January 1406/7,[6] leaving a will dated 28 November 1406. They are buried "at south part of the collegiate church at St. Mary's, Warwick."[1]

Research Notes

Estimated Date: Birth "about 1360" is apparently based on her son's January 1381/2 birth.[4] Her husband was born "before 16 March 1338/9".[1] Her parents married "before 25 April 1344".[7]

Other Reported Children

Richardson lists three children for Thomas and Margaret,[8] but some speculate the daughters attributed to them were actually the daughters of Thomas's older brother Guy [9]

This profile has been identified by Douglas Richardson as in a trail from Gateway Ancestor Maria Johanna Somerset to Magna Carta Surety Baron John de Lacy. The trail has not yet been developed, though substantial parts overlap with other trails. Details of it can be found here. Margaret is also a descendant of Surety Baron Saher de Quincy through her father.[2]
See Base Camp for more information about Magna Carta trails.

Hi Malcolm, sorry but have no answer I suspect that you are right as my reference to her comes as "the daughter of ;;;;;;;;; of Groby"

Is Margaret’s birthplace Groby, Warwickshire a mistake as the family title is based in Groby, Leicestershire even though she married into a Warwickshire family? Whilst searching I cannot find a definitive birthplace for her.

neither source gives her birthplace. I'll remove it from the bio/datafield. Thanks for catching that!

This profile has been identified by Douglas Richardson as in a trail from a Gateway Ancestor to a Magna Carta Surety Baron. See the Magna Carta section under Acknowledgements. I propose therefore to adopt this profile on behalf of the Magna Carta Project.

Douglas Richardson, Magna Carta Ancestry, 2nd Edition, Vol. I, p. 145-146.

states that they had three children: Richard, Catherine & Margaret.

in response to this G2G question, I cleaned up the text for this profile.

Medieval Lands specifically states "one child" while Lewis (Our Royal, Titled...) specifically lists one son & two daughters, citing Richardson. If someone could check the Richardson sources, that would be great.

Thanks!
