Biography

John was born in 1771 in Hebron, Connecticut. He was a farmer of Belchertown. He married Polly Taylor 1 Jan 1796 and had the following children with her:
Nancy 1796
Clarissa 1800
Humphrey 1802
John 1805
Samuel 1812
After Polly's passing 12 September 1832 at age 58 he married Widow Mary Maria Hale and they had two daughters:
Abigail 1834
Hannah 1837

1841Among the members Brainerd Congregational Church in Belchertown Mass, are found John Filer and Mrs. John Filer Mr and Mrs. Humphrey Filer, and Mrs. Gurdon Filer. [2] See image


The 1850 Census finds him living with his son, Humphrey Taylor Filer.

He died suddenly 10 August 1850 in Belchertown, Massachusetts. [3]

"DIED At Granby, 10th, John Filer of Belchertown, 79. He died very suddenly, without a struggle." [4]

John was not listed as a communicant of the Congregational Church in Belchertown, however he is mentioned in the book by Doolittle "John . . . was father of Humphrey T. Filer, now extensively engaged in the carriage business in this place. John his father died here 1850, aged 81; leaving two sons, Humphrey T. and Samuel." "Gurdon Filer and John Filer had a brother by the name of Samuel. . . " [5]
