Biography

Antoine, son of André Fillion and Gabrielle Senler, was born in Paris, France c. 1637; He married at Paris, St-Germain-l'Auxerrois, Île-de-France, France, 16 August 1664, Anne, daughter of Brice d’Anneville and Marguerite Roy, born in Paris, France, c. 1647; He died in Quebec, Canada, Nouvelle-France before November 1669.

Before his marriage, his brother Michel Fillion was asked to certify his signature on a document written by Antoine to Pierre St-Denis in Dieppe, France, in 1663.[1]

Drapeau identifiant les profils du Canada, Nouvelle-France
Antoine Fillion lived
in Canada, Nouvelle-France.

Antoine and his wife Anne arrived at Quebec in 1665, two years after the colony was founded, [2] with two children and Anne's mother and sister. [3]

Antoine’s marriage to Anne d’Anneville is amply documented. He and Anne d'Anneville were married in France in 1664 before embarking to Quebec in 1665. Their first child, Jeanne, was born in France and reportedly died at sea or early on after the family’s arrival in Quebec.

Pierre Fillion (1656-1667,after) - Pierre born in France, arrived in 1665 with Antoine, Anne, and another child named Jeanne as shown on an 1665 immigration record. Pierre is on the 1667 census, aged 10, no other mention is found for him thereafter. The 1667 census shows Pierre at age 10, placing his birth well before Antoine's 1664 marriage to Anne. Pierre's age and his surname and Antoine's age suggest that Pierre could be Antoine's son from a previous marriage.

The baptisms of two children, Jean-Baptiste and Jean, are recorded at Notre-Dame before Antoine’s untimely 1669 death at age 32.

Antoine’s widow, Anne, married Jean Charron. Their 28 Nov 1669 parish marriage record shows that Anne was the widow of Antoine Fillion.

Timeline

  • 1637, about - birth of Antoine Fillion at Paris (Seine), France. See Antoine Fillion birth and marriage infomation at FichierOrigine. [4], [5]
Note: The spelling of the Fillion surname changed to Filion (one 'l') during the family’s next generation in Quebec.
  • 1656, about - birth of son Pierre in Paris, France, from first marriage to unknown spouse. Pierre is found with Antoine and Anne in an 1665 arrival document[3] and in the 1667 Quebec census at age 10.
  • 1664, 16 August - Marriage to Anne d’Anneville at Paris, France.[6] [4]. Their marriage is noted in Tanguay at [7]
  • 1665 - birth of daughter Jeanne Fillion at La Rochelle, France (St-Jean du Perot) [8]
  • 1665, 18 Jun - Antoine Fillion arrived at Quebec with family members from La Rochelle, France. [9] The following family members arrived on the St-Jean-Baptiste:
Marguerite Roy, widow of Brice Danneville.
Her daughters Gabrielle and Anne Danneville
Anne's husband Antoine Fillion ; their daughter Jeanne might have died at sea.
Antoine's family were preceded in Quebec by his brother Michel Fillion.
Note: Migrations web site assigns the St-Jean-Baptiste as the ship on which they arrived, stating it arrived on 28 June 1665. However, the Navires en Nouvelle-France site lists the arrival date of the St-Jean-Baptiste as on 2 October, departure to return to France on 4 November. Antoine and his sister-in-law and mother-in-law are all present in Québec city in July 1665, both women marry then and Antoine is present at both marriages. So the ship is erroneous. Antoine and his wife are in La Rochelle in April 1665 for the birth of their daughter Jeanne. Desbiens: ancêtres Filion states their departure was from La Rochelle on 27 April 1665 on Le Cat de Hollande (no sources are cited on this page). This is a possibility, although not the only one. Navires en Nouvelle-France page for the earlier part of 1665 lists several ships which left La Rochelle and arrived before the 27 July 1665 date of the marriages of Gabrielle and her mother. Listed are Le Chat de Hollande, arr. 18 Jun. Le Vieux Siméon de Dunkerque, arr. 19 Jun, La Marie Thérèse arr. 16 Jul.. So there is conflicting data on this. One prossible ship was Le Vieux Siméon which was the property of Pierre Gaignon, whose wife was godmother to Antoine's daughter Jeanne in 1665 in La Rochelle.[10] This shows that Antoine knew Pierre Gaignon. That ship brought 4 companies of the regiment to the colony. Free passengers are simply not listed in ship manifests.
The Journal des Jésuites lists ship arrivals for 1665 as follows (correlation with ship list in brackets):[11]
18 June: the ship of M. Petit (with 4 companies of Carignan-Salières regiment) (Le Cat aka Chat)
19 june: the ship of M. Le Gangneur (with 4 companies of Carignan-Salières regiment) (Le Vieux Siméon)
30 June: another ship with 4 companies and the sieur de Tracy (Le Brésé)
16 July: the ship of captain Poulet, with M. Bourdon, 12 horses, 8 girls etc. (La Marie Thérèse)
8 August: the lieutenant of the ship L'Aigle arrived to get 4 pilots for his ship and that of captain Guillon, then at Molinbault, to allow the ships to get to final destination (L'Aigle d'Or & La Paix, respectively)
19 August: Mons. de Salières and his son arrive with 4 companies (L'Aigle d'Or)
20 August: captain Guillon with 4 companies arrives (La Paix)
12 September: arrival of the ship St-Sébastien with the governor Courcelles and intendant Talon (Le Saint-Sébastien)
14 September: the ship La Justice with over 100 sick men, some put in the hospital, some in the church (La Justice)
2 October: the ship from Normandie arrived with 82 women and 130 workers (Le Saint-Jean-Baptiste)
7 October: news of the arrival of another ship at Tadoussac
  • 1666 birth and death in Quebec of son Jean-Baptiste Fillion. Jean-Baptiste died on 16 Oct that year. See Drouin record for Jean-Baptiste Fillion burial at Notre-Dame, Quebec. [12]
  • 1667 - Quebec census shows Antoine at age 30, Anne at age 20, and Pierre at age 10. Recensement 1667 Census: Québec, Antoine Fillion, 30 ; Anne d'Anneville, sa femme, 20 ; Pierre, 10. [13]. Also see residence records for Antoine age 30, Pierre age 10, and Michel age 35 [14], for Anne's mother Marguerite Roy Marguerite and for Anne's sister Gabrielle Danneville at Gabrielle
  • 1667, 31 Oct - birth of son Jean Fillion. See Drouin record for Jean Fillion baptism at Notre-Dame, Quebec. [15] and his 1731 death at St-Joachim [16]
  • 1669, 16 Nov, before - Antoine dies at age 32 [4] also see Anne enters into marriage contract with Pierre Charron on 16 Nov 1669. [17]
  • 1669, 16 Nov - Anne Danneville enters into a marriage contract with Pierre Charon,[17][18]
  • 1669 - Michel Fillion, Antoine’s brother, adopts 2 of Antoine’s infant children, Jean and Antoinette. [19] Note later Tanguay records show Jean as a member of Michel’s family. Tanguay doesn’t mention Antoinette Fillion. This is erroneous data on Honorius Provost's part, there is only one surviving child, Jean, as shown by Anne's marriage contract with Jean Charon.[18]
Note: Michel Fillion, the older brother of Antoine, did not marry Anne d'Anneville. Michel did however apparently adopt their son Jean after Antoine died. [19]. Anne remarried later that year (1669) to Jean-Baptiste Charon, and they had 9 known children between 1669 and 1687. Note: Only Jean Fillion appears to have been adopted, the evidence of the 1681 census shows that he is the only other Fillion in the household. See notes.
Tanguay records at 4:1:26 [20] and 1:1:232 [21] are in error about Anne's marriage to Michel Fillion. The error stems from the fact that on Antoine's son Jean's marriage, the father is listed as the late Michel Fillion, rather than Antoine. [19]
  • 1669, 28 Nov - Anne remarries, see 1669 Drouin marriage record at Notre-Dame, Quebec for Jean-Baptiste Charon and Anne d'Anneville [22]. and Genealogical Dictionary of Canadian Families (Tanguay Collection) at [23]

Research Notes

Antoinette Au recensement de 1681, on trouve une Antoinette parmi les membres de la maison de Michel Fillion

on 1681 census is found an Antoinette in the household of Michel Fillion

Recensement 1681 Census: SEIGNEURIE DE BEAUPORT
Et Antoinette n'est pas la soeur de Jean, elle a un nom de famille autre, qui se lit des nante (?); elle serait plutôt domestique de Michel. note that there is are errors, the census taker included Jean Fillion among the servants, he is the nephew adopted by Michel after his brother's death. And Antoinette is NOT Jean's sister, she has another family name which reads <<des nante>> (?); she would rather be a servant of Michel's.[25] Honorius Provost affirme que Michel Fillion adopta <<deux de ses neveux, Jean et Antoinette>> de son défunt frère Antoine. Honorius Provost asserts that Michel Fillion adopted <<two of his nephews, Jean and Antoinette>> from his late brother Antoine.[26]
Antoinette is a girl's name, not a boy's name. There is simply no evidence of her belonging to this family, the census gives her 15 years of age in 1681. This is erroneous data on Honorius Provost's part, there is only one surviving child, Jean, as shown by Anne's marriage contract with Jean Charon.[18]

Hi Denis

The Drouin marriage record for the d’Anderville/Charron marriage explicitly mentions that Anne was the widow of Antoine. For some reason Antoine’s burial appears to be missing, So his death occurred between the 1667 conception of son Jean (he was baptized 31 Oct 1667) and Anne’s 1669 marriage on 28 Nov.

Antoine’s death can be moved up if one factors in the birth of Antoinette Fillion, c. late 1668. Antoinette is mentioned in some references but her parentage is not recorded in a discovered parish record.

Antoinette’s adoption is mentioned in an entry for Michel Fillion in the Dictionary of Canadian Bioraphy at http://www.biographi.ca/en/bio/fillion_michel_1E.html

This might be Anoinette’s burial record https://www.ancestry.com/imageviewer/collections/1091/images/d13p_31420581 Regards Ed
