Jack was born in 1902 to Frederick George Finlay and Jeannie Fulton Adams.[1] After his marriage to Gladys, they had two sons, one of whom tragically was drowned when he slipped into a water hole.
Some years after his first wife died, Jack Finlay married again, to Miss Bettine Courtis and in about 1963 they had twin daughters Margaret and Jeannie.
As a lad, Jack had been keen to play cricket, and joined the West Preston Methodist Cricket Club. One of the rules was that you had to attend church, and there he met Joseph Orton who sometimes asked a group of lads to accompany him when he went preaching at places like Mernda. Jack was one of these lads who gradually was encouraged to take some part in leading worship services.
Jack Finlay became a Presbyterian Minister of Religion and he had numerous postings in both Victoria and Tasmania. In Tasmania, he was at Oatlands for several years. His Victorian placements included Tallangatta, Mooroopna, Dandenong, Sorrento and Lockington. [2] Jack passed away in 1996 at the age of 94 and was cremated at the Springvale Botanical Cemetery in Melbourne, Victoria.[3] NB - My Grand Uncle Jack Adams was buried at Kangaroo Flat Cemetery, Greater Bendigo, Victoria, Australia. The Springvale listing is for an ANZAC memorial. (Grand Niece / Great Niece J.E. Fletcher)
Jack served as an Army Chaplain in the Australian Army during WW2 with the 2/14 Australian Infantry Battalion.[4]
