Agnes (Finlayson) Knox was born in Scotland.

Biography

On 2 Apr 1911, age 19, she worked as a Typist in a Wire Rope Works and lived with her brother Alex (Tinsmith, age 27) and his wife Alexandrina on Victoria Road, Larbert, Stirlingshire, Scotland.^[1] Also present in the household was her sister Effie (14).^[1]

On 7 Oct 1911, she sailed with her sister Effie on the SS Cameronia from Glasgow bound for New York.^[2] Also traveling in the same party were Euphemia Finlayson (the wife of their cousin David) and her daughter, also called Euphemia.^[2]

During World War One, Agnes volunteered to serve in France as an auxiliary with the YMCA and worked in their Paris office.^[3][4]

On 2 Nov 1919, age 28, she arrived at Ellis Island, New York on board the ship Columbia from Glasgow.^[5] Her occupation was given as Stenographer and her last permanent address as Paris, France.^[5] Her nearest relative was given as her brother Alexander FINLAYSON of Dunnottar, Larbert, Scotland and her final destination as her home at 619 49th Street, Brooklyn, New York.^[5] Agnes was 5ft 5in tall and had fair hair, blue eyes and a fair complexion.^[5] She had previously been in New York between 1911 and 1918.^[5]

In Jan 1920, age 28, she was working as a Stenographer at the YMCA and living with her brother James and his wife Emily at the Engstrum Hotel Apartments, 623 West Fifth Street, Los Angeles, California, USA.^[6]

On 18 Jun 1920, age 29, Agnes married James KNOX,^[7] a 46 year old widower with three children.

In 1925, age 34, Agnes lived with her husband James, a Musician, at 7520 7th Av. in Brooklyn, New York.^[8]

On 11 Apr 1929, Agnes submitted a Petition for Naturalisation as a United States citizen.^[7] At this time, she lived at 7520 7th Av. in Brooklyn.^[7] She had arrived in the United States on 15 Oct 1911 on the S.S. Cameronia from Glasgow, Scotland.^[7] Her husband James had become a naturalised U.S. citizen on 1 Jun 1923.^[7] A certificate of naturalisation was issued on 16 Jul 1929.^[7] One of the witnesses to the petition was Margaret MONCRIEFFE, Housekeeper, of the same address as Agnes.^[7] Margaret was the sister of Agnes' husband, i.e. her sister-in-law.^[9]

In Apr 1930, age 38, she lived with her husband James, an Instructor of Music, at 7520 7th Av. in Brooklyn, Kings, NY, USA.^[10]

On 21 Jul 1930, age 39, Agnes arrived in Liverpool, England with her husband James (57, Musician) on the S.S. Britannic of the White Star Line, which had sailed from New York.^[11] Their proposed address in the UK was c/o Watson, Main Street, Bonnybridge in Stirlingshire, Scotland.

On 15 Sep 1930, age 39, she arrived in New York with her husband James (58) on the S.S. Baltic, which had left Liverpool on 6 Sep 1930.^[12] Their address was given as 7520 7th Av. in Brooklyn, Kings, NY, USA.^[12]

On 12 Dec 1935, her husband James passed away in their home at 7520 7th Av. in Brooklyn, Kings, NY, USA.^[13] James was buried in Evergreen Cemetery.^[13]

In 1940, age 48, Agnes lived with her sister Jean's family on Long Island in Oyster Bay, Nassau, New York, USA.^[14] Agnes was a widow, working as a Housekeeper and had lived in the same house in 1935.^[14]
