Sophia was born in 1852. She emigrated from Germany to the U.S. in 1871 on the ship Cimbria. No other family members are listed as traveling with her. The 1900 U.S. census reports that she had 15 children, 11 of whom were alive in 1900. After Frederick's death in 1898, she remarried in 1900 to August Roeder. The 1900 census shows them living in Maple Grove township in Hennepin County, along with four of their children, Fred, Eda, Louis, and Henry. She passed away in 1926 and is buried with her second husband in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery in Osseo, Minnesota.
