Biography

Joanna Fish was born 20 May 1689, the daughter of Ambrose Fish and Hannah Swift of Sandwich, Barnstable, Massachusetts.[1]

Circa 1706 or 1707 she married Eliakim Tupper, the son of Thomas and Martha (Mayhew) Tupper, also of Sandwich. There doesn't appear to be a marriage record, but the connection is proved by the will of her mother, Hannah (Swift) (Fish) Tobey dated 1721, in which she makes specific reference to "my son Eliakim Tupper and my daughter Johannah Tupper his wife."[2] [3] [4]

  • Her name is Joanna Gibbs according to 'Tupper Desc.', NEHGR (revised Vol. 99) and 'Annals of Barnstable, MA', Vol. 1[5]. However, there is no source provided in this reference, which includes dubious and perhaps conflated information for other members of the Tupper family[6] and is not accepted by other researchers for Joanna[4] . Plus, her mother's will is pretty clear.

Children included[7]:

  1. Ruth[3], born June 30, 1708[7], who married Jabez Dunkin[5] [4]
  2. Ann[3], born June 20, 1710, who died on August 17[7] [5] [4]

  5. Elias [3], born October 12, 1715[7], who married Jerusha Sprague and emigrated to Nova Scotia[5] [4] [8]
  6. Abigail[3], born August 13, 1717[7], who married Silas Swift[5] [4]
  7. Thomas[3], born November 21, 1719[9], who married Ruth Owen[5] [4]
  8. Hannah [3], born August 23, 1721[9], who married Thomas Thacher[5] [4]
  9. Joanna [3], born March 24, 1722, who died in April 1723[9] [5] [4]
  10. Joanna[3], born April 26, 1724[9], who married Rowland Ellis[5] [4]
  11. Nathaniel[3], born April 24, 1726[9], who married Elizabeth Gager and then married Sarah Hanchett[5] [4]
  12. Deborah[3], born March 24, 1728[9], who married Jonathan Newcomb[5] [4]
  13. Charles[3], born December 28, 1729[9], who died, unmarried before 1776 [5]
  14. Solomon[3], born October 17, 1731[9], who married Abia West[5] [4]

In 1736, Eliakim and Joanna moved with their family to Connecticut, where the children's marriages are recorded.

Joanna is believed to have passed away in January 1760 in Lebanon, Connecticut, where her daughter Abigail Swift was living.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Joanna by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Joanna:

Kathleen, what evidence for the middle name Elonda? Middle names were pretty nonexistent in this era.
posted by Jillaine Smith
I've added her birth record which does not mention Elonda. I also searched, unsuccessfully, for a marriage record that is given as a specific date (14 Mar 1706) and did not locate a source. I believe that marriage date, lacking a reliable source, should be replaced with "ca. 1706" based on the birth of their first child Ruth in 1708. I don't have access to the Tupper Family cited, so perhaps there is a source in there which can be used? Is that book perhaps also the source of her death data?

Hi Jillaine I've removed the middlename as I have no idea where it came from.
Tobey-260 and Fish-70 appear to represent the same person because: Same date of birth and of death. Same father. Tobey is the maiden name of her stepmother. There is a record of her birth to Ambrose Fish and Hannah Swift in the vital records of Sandwich, Barnstable County (found on Ancestry.com) Fish is the correct last name at birth.
