James was born on 14 March 1843, and christened on 9 April 1843 in Bothkennar, Stirlingshire, Scotland. He is the son of James Fisher and Janet Drummond.[1]
He appears on the 1851 census with his parents, living in Maitland Street, Bothkennar, aged 8, a scholar.[2]
Along with his parents and siblings, he arrived in Victoria, Australia in October 1854 on Black Eagle.[3]
