Biography

Geoffrey (or Jeffrey/Jefffery) Fiske was the son of Robert Fiske and Sibilla (Gold) Barber.[1] His date and place of birth are unknown, as no birth/baptism record has been found for him. Moriarty estimates Geoffrey's birth year as about 1552.[2] He was probably born in either Laxfield or South Elmham, Suffolk: his father was taxed in Laxfield in 1545/6 and was listed on the lay subsidy of South Elmham in 1567/8.[1]

Geoffrey is named as one of Robert's four sons in Robert's will dated 10 April 1590 and proved 28 July 1602.[1][3]

Geoffrey married Mary Cooke, probably at South Elmham, Suffolk.[2] No marriage record was found for the couple and the year of their marriage is based on the estimated year of birth of their first child. Geoffrey and Mary had at least ten children, all of them probably born at St. James South Elmham, Suffolk:

  1. Samuel, born about 1586; named in his father's 1629 will; married _____, with whom he had at least one child[2]
  2. Nathaniel, born about 1588; buried at St. James 13 September 1601[2]
  3. Mary, born about 1590; married first ____ Brame; married second John More of Wissett; died without issue[2]
  4. Nathan, New England immigrant by 1642; born about 1592, died 21 June 1676 at Watertown; married Susanna[2] Porter and had children
  5. Clara, baptized 10 March 1593/4; probably died young[2]
  6. Lydia, born about 1595; married ______; died without issue[2]
  7. Anne, baptized October 1596; married William Bird and had ten children, although many of them died young[2]
  8. Elizabeth, baptized 22 April 1599; married _____ Pygott; died without issue[2]
  9. David, New England immigrant by 1637; born about 1601, died by 22 January 1661/2 at Watertown; married Sarah Smith and had at least two children[2]
  10. Martha, New England immigrant in 1634; baptized 9 September 1602, died 6 May 1684 at Watertown; married Martin Underwood, died without issue[2]

His wife, Mary, was buried at St. James, South Elmham on 16 May 1614.[2]

"Jeffery Fiske" was a yeoman of Great Bentley, Essex, when he wrote his will on 11 May 1629. It was proved at Colchester on 23 July 1629. David Fiske of Weeley, Essex (probably his son) and Martin Underwood (his son-in-law) were appointed executors and residuary beneficiaries of his Great Bentley estate. In his will, he only left bequests to Samuel Fisk (his eldest son) and Samuel's daughter, Elizabeth Fisk.[3] Geoffrey did not make provisions for all of his living children, nor did he dispose of any land in his will. These omissions are thought to have been made because his daughter's portions were likely given to them at their marriages. It is also presumed that he divided his property at South Elmham when he moved to Great Bentley, where he lived his last few years with his daughter, Martha Underwood, and her husband.[2]
