Born about 1539 Mary FitzAlan was the third and youngest child of Henry FitzAlan and his first wife, Katherine Grey. Her mother died in 1542 and in 1545 her father took as his second wife Mary Arundell daughter of John Arundell and his wife, Jane Grenville. Mary is remembered today for her classical learning, her works now at the British Library, her last work being undertaken together with her step-brother, John Ratcliffe. [1]
Mary married Thomas Howard, Duke of Norfolk, son of Henry Howard Earl of Surrey and his wife, Frances de Vere on 30 March 1555.[2] Her brother Henry died in Brussels on 30 Jun 1556,[3] leaving Mary and her sister, Jane as their father's joint heirs.
On 28 Jun 1557 she gave birth at Arundel House to her only child, a son, Philip.[4] [5]
Mary died on 25 August 1557 at Arundel House in the Strand and was buried at St Clement Danes.[6]
The portrait by Hans Eworth of a 16 year old lady in red dated 1565 has traditionally been believed to have been of Mary FitzAlan Howard however Mary was dead before that date. It has been suggested that the date should be 1555 based on the costume detail which was the year of Mary's marriage. [7]
