F > FitzRobert | F > FitzHarding > Nicholas (FitzRobert) FitzHarding
For the Anglo-Norman era, there are examples of fitz names being sticky over multiple generations. I may be wrong, but it's my impression this is more common with Irish families and Scottish clans, which may have been influencing the "English" post conquest, pre Reformation? I dunno.
The only way to be sure is to refer to this guy as Nicholas FitzRobert FitzHarding, and add at least one date when mentioning him. Annoying! At least he's not one of the infernally sequential Roger fitzRoger de Berkeleys. ;-)
