Biography

Birth, Parents and Last Name

Christian was the daughter of Robert FitzWalter, Knt., 1st Lord FitzWalter, and his wife Devourguille, elder daughter and co-heiress of John de Burgh, Knt.[1][2] Her birth date is not known, but her husband was born in 1277[1][2] and her son John was born in 1292,[3] so an estimate of about 1277 seems reasonable. She may have been born in Henham, Essex where her brother Walter was born in 1275.[4]
Christian adopted her mother's last name.[1]

Marriage and Children

She married William Marshal, son and heir of John le Marshal, Knt., by Hawise de Say.[1] William le Marshal, Knt., 1st Lord Marshal, was hereditary Marshal of Ireland.[1][2] Given the birth date of their son John, they must have married before 1292.
Children
  • John,[1][2] who was born 1 August 1292 and married Ela before 6 December 1311. He died s.p. on 12 August 1316. His heirs were his two sisters[3] Denise and Hawise.[5]
  • Denise,[1][2] her parents' middle child, died 14 September 1316.[3][5]
  • Hawise,[2][5] who was born about 1301 (15 in 1316) and married Robert de Morley. She died before 1329.[6][7]

Lands

On 20 April 1313 Christian was assigned a share in estates of her deceased nephew Robert, son of her brother Walter, at Bromley, Halingbury and Lexden in Essex and Datchworth, Henlow and Walkern in Hertfordshire, with associated advowsons.[8] On 1 October 1313 she was given permission to grant her share in most of these properties to her father and her stepmother Alice.[9][10] Douglas Richardson says she also inherited Hamerton in Huntingdonshire from her nephew.[1][2]

Widowhood and Death

Christian was widowed 24 June 1314, when Sir William le Marshal died in the Battle of Bannockburn in Scotland. After his death, she became a nun at Holywell Priory, Middlesex. She died before 6 December 1315,[1][2] quite likely at the Priory. (FindAGrave gives a burial date of 6 December 1315 for her, without a source, and this is probably a misunderstanding of sources saying she died before that date.[11])

Research Notes

Children

Wikipedia lists Christian's children as John, Hawise, and Ellen wife of Robert de Mautby (Robert Mawtby), citing Douglas Richardson's Magna Carta Ancestry (2nd edition).[12] The inclusion of Ellen does not correspond to what Richardson says: Richardson names the children as John, Hawise and Denise.[4][2]
The Paston pedigree in the Harleian Society enlarged edition of Norfolk visitations says that Robert Mawltby married "Ellen da. of William Marshall" with no further identification of William.[13] As often with expanded 19th century editions of Visitations, it is impossible to tell how far this pedigree reflects what was in original visitations, and what has been added by the editor. There is no evidence that Christian and her husband William Marshal had a child called Ellen, and, as their daughter Hawise ended up as her brother John's heir,[5] her sister Denise having died in September 1316,[3] with no mention of rights of an Ellen,[14] it is very unlikely any such Ellen was their daughter. Dates shown (as of 12 May 2022) on the profiles of Robert Mautby and his son John would appear anyway to rule out the relationship.
If Robert Maultby married an Ellen daughter of a William Marshal, it was almost certainly a different William Marshal who was Ellen's father. See more discussion on Ellen's profile.
