Eddie Fitzgerald was born in Young NSW when his parents were running 'The Shamrock Hotel' on the old Young/Grenfell Road near McHenrys Creek. His father died when Eddie was not quite 2 years old.
Following his mother's remarriage in 1897 he moved with his family to Peak Hill and by 1903 to Sydney and were living in Albion Street, Surry Hills.
Eddie began work as a Clerk in the Department of Railways. According to his mother soldiering had an attraction for him and at the time of his enlistment on 17 August 1914 he was already a member of the Citizen Forces.
Eddie was a Private in the 4th Battalion, 1st Infantry, left Australia on "Euripides" 20 October 1914 for training in Egypt, then landed at Anzac Cove - Anzac Day 1915, and was KIA on that date. He was buried at Schrapnel Valley Cemetery, about 400 yards south east of Anzac Cove, Gallipoli.
Two photos of Eddie from my collection.
