The Medical Association of Georgia was founded in Macon in 1849. At its 35th meeting, Dr. James Washington Flanders of Wrightsville volunteered three papers. The titles appear on page 183 of the digitized "Atlanta Medical and Surgical Journal," and include "Successful Removal of a Uterine Tumor per Vergenum," "A Case of Supposed Superfoetation," and "A Case of Immediate Resection of the Humerus with Union and Subsequent Lengthening of the Bone."

Dr. Flanders graduated from Oglethorpe Medical School in Savannah in 1859. During service with the 57th Georgia, he was present at the siege of Vicksburg, where was wounded in the elbow. He directed its setting at an angle, which allowed him to continue to perform surgeries.
