Biography

Andrewe Foster of Gilston (nuncupative will 1622), is the brother of Michael. Nothing is certain about Andrew's origins, but he married Margery Elliott of Olyves -- now called Olives farm, located in Hertforshire.

Andrew's nephew Joseph (son of Michael Foster), was living in 1650, when he and Samuel Petchy were appointed as jurors.[8]

Andrew Foster had no known male issue. It was Samuel Petchy and his wife Elizabeth, who were named as inheritors of Foster's estate.[3]

  3. 3.0 3.1 "Margery Eliot's husband may have been the Andrew Foster who was buried at Gilston, Hertfordshire, 13 November 1621 (parish registers of Gilston [FHL 0,991,374]), presumably identical with Andrew Foster of Gilston, yeoman, who left an undated nuncupative will, proved in 1622, which names Samuel and Elizabeth Petchey to receive the remainder of his estate following the decease of his wife, unnamed.[2]
No children are identified. Joseph and John Foster, sons of his brother Michael, are mentioned (Essex Record Office, Commissary Court, Essex and Herts Jurisdiction, D/ABW 13/258). While it is tempting to think that Andrew and Margery (Eliot) Foster might be the parents of Andrew Foster of Andover, Massachusetts, the author has not found any documentation to support the possibility that the couple had any surviving male heirs" (Fiske, 2008, p. 71).[3]
  4. Andrew's connection to the Forsters of Hunsdon is unproven and he's not a known/recorded member of this branch. He also died without issue, but a discussion at G2G goes over why he's left in place until we can figure something out.[4]
  5. citing marriage: Andrew Foster and Margery Elliot of Olyves May 17, 1584. (Olives is a farm in Hunsdon ... it's a Grade II building.[5]).

TO DO:
  • Research: Gilston adjoins Sawbridgeworth, and includes St. Mary church, and Advowson -- known to have plenty of Fosters (see records at FamilySearch).[1]
  • Wills at Chelmsford (Essex and East Hertfordshire).[2][3]
  • There is a baptism record for Androw Foster (bp. 1565 Warbleton, Sussex) ... also one for an "Andria Foster" (female?), who was bp. 1570 at Romford, Essex. (indexed at Findmypast.com).[4]
  • In 1650 Joseph Foster -- nephew of Andrewe Foster of Gilston (will 1622) and son of Michael -- was a juror along with Andrewe Foster's successor, Samuel Petchy (who inherited Andrew Foster's estate after widow's death).[5]
