Alvin was born in 1837. He passed away in 1870.
He was a school teacher, widowed in a carriage accident (horse bolted due to train). His brother-in-law Whitman was driving; this occurred when Alvin's daughter Mabel Augusta was exactly 6 mos old. The verbal story was passed to his great-grand-daughter Augusta Jordan Alger. Alvin then married his sister-in-law "Josie" but died within 2 years of typhoid, possibly associated with wounds and illness suffered in civil war (served 10 Sep 1862 to 15 Jul 1863). Apparently, she raised Mabel, but the findagrave doesn't give dates.
