Biography

RUTH FOTHERINGHAM STIRLING A Creative Talent. A Consecrated Soul. A gift of God.

On Sunday last, at 3 AM, According to God's Plan, Our Mother, Ruth, departed life For heav'n, whence she began. At 90 years, as great reward, Our Father called her home. So now we weave her life, And love and talents in a poem.

Ruth Fotheringham began this life - December 12, '18, The last of seven, Ruthie was, The fam'ly's little queen. Her parents, Steve and Libby, Were industrious and witty, And raised their brood in paths Of righteousness in Salt Lake City.

In '36 the fam'ly moved To California land, Where soon she met Doug Stirling, Who courted for her hand. They temple wed in '38 - In Utah in the fall; United over 70 years - Examples to us all.

With dedication and with drive, She served God and his saints, "I can," she said to every call, With never any "cain'ts". Her creative talents soared to heights, Unventured by the throngs. She wrote at least 500 poems, And near 200 songs.

She sought 'the lost' throughout her life, To lift the lonely heart, To find amongst the teeming crowd To whom she could impart. She drew from 'children' young and old Their brightest gifts and talents, And gave the gift of a better self, And a new life in the balance.

"Great," she knew, "was the worth of souls," In God's Eternal Plan. And it was her blessing to reach and touch The souls of the children of man.

And all who knew her testify Of the simple joy she'd bring, Through a word, or a smile or a talent or poem, Or a song that a child could sing.

She bore five children, each one graced To call her "Mother Dear" - Mike, Kathleen Dale, Bob, Penny, Steve - All longing to shed a tear. But more, these five, in reverent awe, While laying her to rest, Stand prepared to rise and cry aloud, "In Zion thy name be blessed!"

Her hero and sweetheart survives her - (Doug's 95 this year), With their children and 19 grandchildren, Coming from far and near. And then 41 great grandchildren, And Leah her older sister - Why, the listing alone of her pedigree chart Would give any writer a blister!

Beloved Ruth you've left your mark On all who've felt your touch; Your joy, your genius, your gift of self, Has changed us all so much. Because of you we're not the same, As who we might have been. Awaiting you are exalted thrones, And kingdoms we may win.

We look and we shall ever look With a gaze of tender love; To you who gave us life and hope, And a pathway to heav'n above. Your example has led to God's threshold, And the light of the Savior's care. But to us it will ever be cherished, Worth reaching because you are there.

Funeral services for Ruth Fotheringham Stirling will beheld on Wednesday, April 22, 2009 at the Quail Ridge LDS Ward Chapel, 860 N. Fairway, Washington, Utah. Interment will be in the Washington City Cemetery under the direction of Metcalf Mortuary.
