My name is Tommy Francis and was born in 1938 and live in Hamilton Co TN. I have been researching our Francis Family for about 10 years. Last week I drove up Hwy 58 to Snow Hill Rd and found Anderson Springs and about 500 yards behind the Spring on a small hill by the Long Savannah Creek was a very old cemetery which was all grown over and grave stones knocked over and some graves sunk in, cattle roam all over the old Cemetery, this is the place where My 3rd great grandfather Hugh Francis was buried in March of 1843. As I stood there looking I thought what a day that must have been. Just about 5 miles away lived his daughter Jane Francis Luttrell and her husband the Reverend George Luttrell they lived on a 565 acre farm on a hill overlooking the Tn River. their 12 children were there, George probably preached at his service. And here on Long Savannah Creek lived his son James Carlton Francis who was Sheriff of Hamilton Co TN. with his wife Sarah Mckinney and two of their children Christopher Columbus and Nancy. There was his son John Wood Francis and his wife Nancy McKinney and their 3 year old son Miller. . Hugh's daughter Elizabeth and her husband Sanford Richey and her children from her 1st marriage to William Hale, there was Francis, Fountain, Matilda,Joseph, John Woodson , Elizabeth, and William. Also there was her children with Sanford Richey,Jane and Mary. His daughter Nancy who married Lewis Burris and Susanna who married Stephen Burris. then there was my 2nd great grandfather, the older brother of James Carlton and John Wood, Charles Smith Francis with his wife Elizabeth, they lived about 50 miles away in Roane Co TN . Sarah Francis Hugh's daughter with Salley Cox was also there. She was living with her father Hugh Francis. Captain Hugh Francis along with his father Joseph and his brothers Miller Francis and Woodson Francis brought this family from Virginia in the late 1790's to Knox Co Tn then to Roan and Rhea Co and now in Hamilton Co. Hugh Francis was a Captain in the Roane County Militia, Miller Francis was the first Sheriff of Rhea Co from1807 thru 1817 his brother Woodson was Sheriff from 1817 to 1827. Joseph Francis went with his daughter Judith Francis Henry and her husband Ezekiel in the late 1820's and died in Troup Co Georgia he was over 100 years old. Anderson Springs is where they all gathered before they all left. James Carlton and his family went to Cherokee Co Texas he died 25th March 1881. Sarah Francis Hugh's daughter went to Texas with James Carlton and she lived with them. John Wood went to North Carolina and then to Cherokee Co Texas he died 9th of May 1902. Elizabeth and Sanford Ritchey went to Dallas Co Mo. Elizebeth came back to Hamilton Co after Sanford died and she died after 1870. Charles Smith Francis and his wife Elizabeth went to Morgan Co TN he was shot and killed in 1863 Charles fought for the Union Army his brothers fought for the South. At Anderson Springs there was a old home that was torn down about 1960 I beleve it was the old home of Hugh Francis. It would be nice if someone could take care of this old cemetery I beleve it is on top of a old indian mound if any one wants to add or take away from this let me know. tommyfrancissr@hotmail.com or call 423-468-4247 1830 United States Federal Census 1840 United States Federal Census The history of Roane County, Tennessee, 1801-1870
