Research Notes

  • In a Claim of Widow For Bounty Land, Francis Carroll, wife of John Wilson Carroll stated in her affidavit filed 28 August 1878 in the Edmonson County Court that they had lived in "South Carolina, then to Georgia, then to Tennessee, then to Kentucky, then to Indiana then to Kentucky where I now reside." She states that John Carroll was 5 feet, 11 1/2 inches tall with dark hair and eyes. He died on 28 August 1866 (1862 on other records). She stated that her husband served 18 months in the 8th North Carolina Regiment under Capt. Twiggs. She was residing in the home of Ambrose Marion on Dog Creek in Hart County, Kentucky Claim No. 32, 648 (23, 788-160-50) received 17 October 1878.
  • An affidavit for Bounty Land signed by S. R. (Seldon R.) Sanders and John M. Sanders affirmed that they had known John Carroll personally for 15 years and 20 years respectively and that he had served in the company of Captain Twiggs of the North Carolina Volunteers in the War of 1812. This affidavit was signed August 26, 1878, in the Edmonson County Court. An affidavit signed by Frederick Meredith, deputy clerk, Edmonson County Court 26 August 1878.
  • Isaac W. Gore in General Affidavit # L-780 Edmonson County Court affirmed that he was 48 years of age and had known John Carroll and his wife Francis Carroll for 31 years and that John Carroll had received a land warrant in the year 1850 and that he had died August 28, 1862. His information was always that they had been married in 1814 and had seen the Family Record of the births of their children but that record was destroyed. He stated that Elijah A. Carroll was born the 15th day of March, 1815. An affidavit signed by Gore on 21 May 1879.
  • Francis Carroll claimed in General Affidavit # L-780 that she and John Carroll were married in 1814 before the Battle of New Orleans. She stated that "...she being quite young her parents objected..." to her marriage. She was 14-years-old at the time and he was 21-years-old. That she and her husband had resided in Georgia and that they crossed over into South Carolina and were married by a Justice of the Peace, Esquire _______ Kidd. The record of which she is unable to obtain. She stated that she never kept a family record of this marriage.
  • In an affidavit filed by John Carroll in LaRue County Court House 8 January 1853, he enlisted in Spartanburg, S.C. for a period of 18 months during the War of 1812 and served in the company commanded by a Capt. Twiggs in the 8th Regiment of Light Infantry Commanded by Colonel Tack (Jack). He further stated that he was honorably discharged in Savannah, Georgia by Lieutenant Roberts of Capt. Twiggs Company. There is an Albert Carrel listed in the Census of 1860 of the same county. It is unclear who he is the son of. There is a Thomas Carrel listed in Edmonson County and he gives his place of birth as Ireland. John Wilson Carroll died on August 28, 1866, as sworn by his widow Frances Franklin in an affidavit for a pension for his service in the War of 1812. She applied on August 26, 1878, in Edmonson County, Kentucky.
  • 1860 Edmonson County Census: John Carrol was listed as being 68-years-old (1792); Farmer; South Carolina. Frances "Fanny" Franklin, his wife, is listed as being born in Virginia. ****It should be noted here that local tradition states that John Wilson Carroll fought in the Battle of New Orleans, but he did not, he was in the east during this time period. Clearly, Frances Carroll is using The Battle of New Orleans as a time reference and not that John married her then went to fight. John was discharged and then they were married. Fannie was born in VA., but some records show South Carolina.
  • She was originally interred in the Old Carroll Cemetery which is now submerged, but moved in 1962 when the Nolin Dam and reservoir were built.
  • Faye Carroll, Bowling Green, Kentucky purchased the modern cemetery markers for Frances and her husband.
