Biography

Sarah was a daughter of Joseph Addison Frazer and Frances "Fannie" Renick. She was born in 1824 and died in 1893. She married Richard S. Summerson in 1846, in Greenbrier, Virginia. [1] Eventually, Richard and Sarah moved to Staunton, Virginia.


Census Details

The 1870 Census shows Sarah and Richard in Staunton, Virginia. Richard is listed as "retired farmer," while Sarah is noted as being "at housekeeping." Their six children -- William, Henry, Junius, Richard, Fannie, and Mary -- were living with them at the time. Also living with the Summersons were a Black woman, Ellen Alexander, listed as a domestic worker, and two mixed-race children. [2]

The 1880 Census also Sarah and Richard in Staunton, Virginia. This was just before Richard's death in December 1880. At the time of this Census, Sarah is listed as living with several generations of her family -- her daughter Mary Summerson, son Junius Summerson, daughter-in-law Ella Summerson, grandson Charles Summerson, granddaughter Martha "Pattie" Summerson, and her parents Joseph Addison Frazier and Frances "Fannie" Frazier. Death

Sarah died on May 1, 1893, in Staunton, Virginia, at the home of her son William F. Summerson. She had been suffering from pneumonia for about two weeks at the time of her death. [4] She was 69 years old.
