Biography

Louisa Fry was born on February 6, 1868 in Thatcham, London, England. She was the daughter of George and Martha (Davenport) Fry.

Louisa's 1st spouse was Lipman Davis as of the year 1890 (approximate). Lipman was a Russian subject, naturalized in the UK on July 30, 1876. Lipman took his Oath to the UK on August 4th, 1876. He was a glass cutter in the picture frame industry. Lipman had married previously, but this wife removed to the USA leaving him without divorce. This lack of legal closure on his previous marriage prevented his remarriage to Louisa (aka Lavinia, Ruth) though Louisa took on his surname. Louisa and Lipman resided in Whitechapel, London, England. They had four daughters including Zalda (died in infancy), Rachel Esther, Eva, and Sarah Golda. Lipman passed away in 1900, Fall--Q4.

Louisa "Lavinia, Ruth" was enumerated in the 1901 England Census and resided that year with her and Lipman's 3 daughters. "Ruth" Davis was described therein as "Widow." Louisa "Lavinia, Ruth" also appeared the following year within the "Electoral (Voting) Register," living in a dwelling house on Frying Pan Alley in Whitechapel, Tower Hamlets.

After Lipman's death in fall 1900, Lavinia "Ruth" (Louisa) married Efrayim Joseph Franks, widower, in October 1904. Efrayim's brother, Yehudah, attended the wedding. Lavinia "Ruth" was noted in the Synagogue marriage registry as a native of London and who had converted to Judaism. Despite previous spousal type relationships including children born from these relationships, both Efrayim and Lavinia "Ruth" described in their marriage registration document that they had not been previously married.

Lavinia "Ruth" (Louisa) and Efrayim Joseph had two children including David Joseph (Franks) and Leah (Josephs). Efrayim and Lavinia "Ruth" (Louisa) resided and raised their family in Bethnal Green.

Lavinia "Ruth" was a "milk dealer" as noted in the 1901 Census record and a "tailor-ess" as described in the 1911 Census record.

In 1934 and following her husband's death on January 19, 1933, Mrs. Lavinia Franks appeared in the 1934 "Trades" Directory as located on Canrobert Street in Bethnal Green East. In 1939, Lavinia, widow, was documented as residing on Stanley Road in Edmonton, Middlesex, England, her occupation as "Unpaid Domestic Duty."

Lavinia was named executrix in her husband's Will and heir to his estate. Lavinia passed away in Edmonton, Middlesex, England October 27, 1943. She is buried at the Edmonton Federation of Synagogues Cemetery, Edmonton, London Borough of Enfield, Greater London, England.
