Historical setting
Born in the wake of the Eureka Stockade and gold-miner rebellion over unfair government treatment, and in a colony overflowing with wealth sufficient to build grand buildings, he lived to see the six Australian Colonies federate to form the Commonwealth of Australia, albeit with a great depression in the 1890s. The South Pole was reached by intrepid explorers. He saw the effects of the catastrophic First World War. Technology brought the automobile and aeroplane during Charles' lifetime.
