Charles Fry has English ancestors.

Charles Henry Fry was born on 17th October 1858 in Heidelberg Road (Merri Creek), Colony of Victoria (from 1901 a State of Australia). He was the youngest son of English emigrants, William Fry and Elizabeth Dunk. [1] He was the thirteenth of fourteen siblings.

Charles was a butcher and labourer during his working life.

Charles married Selina Ladhams on 9th July 1884 in Bacchus Marsh, Victoria. [2] Charles and Selina firstly made their home in the Bacchus Marsh region (on the road west from Melbourne to Ballarat), and then from 1892 they lived at 12 Park Street, Northcote, Victoria. They had seven children:

  1. Clarice Selina (1885-1956), married surname Rutherford; settled in Northcote with their son and daughter.
  2. Ethel May (1886-1919), married surname Cunningham; lost her husband killed in action October 1918 and died five months later; two daughters.
  3. Victor Charles (1888-1931); initially settled in Northcote, where he had a son and a daughter.
  4. Mark Leslie (1890-1969); had at least 12 children.
  5. Harold William (1894-1949), served on the Western Front in the First World War with the 8th Infantry Battalion; following which he married and had four children.
  6. Ada Emily (1895-1971), never married.
  7. Albert Arthur Henry (1900-89), married and had 2 sons and 4 daughters.

Charles passed away on 1st December 1924 and is buried in Northcote Cemetery, Victoria. [3] He was survived by his wife, four sons and two daughters, children-in-law and more than a dozen grandchildren.

Historical setting

Born in the wake of the Eureka Stockade and gold-miner rebellion over unfair government treatment, and in a colony overflowing with wealth sufficient to build grand buildings, he lived to see the six Australian Colonies federate to form the Commonwealth of Australia, albeit with a great depression in the 1890s. The South Pole was reached by intrepid explorers. He saw the effects of the catastrophic First World War. Technology brought the automobile and aeroplane during Charles' lifetime.
