William Fry was born in 1835 in Kent, England, the third son of William Fry and Eliza Groombridge. He was christened in Maidstone, Kent, in July 1835. His mother passed away the following year.

Emigrated to Victoria aboard the William Metcalfe; departed Plymouth 26th July 1839 and arrived Melbourne, in the Port Phillip District, Colony of New South Wales (later Victoria, Australia) on 15th November 1839. Melbourne at that time had barely been settled four years. So the Fry family were indeed pioneers.
