Biography

Will - Probate Record
Case No 6668, Springfield, Hampden, Massachusetts
Polly Knox's will is handwritten. The will is dated May 24, 1855. It was not proved until Sept 1856.
"I Polly Knox of Granville, County of Hampden, Commonwealth of Massachusetts being of sound and defining mind, do make and publish and declare this my last will and testament." Remaining text not listed here as too long. She bequeathed to the living children one dollar each. "Nathan Knox, James Knox, Rachel Hall wife of Joel Hall, Polly Knox widow of Zenas Hart, Samuel Knox, Cynthia Knox and Eli Knox." She further "gives and bequeathes to Stephen Oatley and his wife Mary the bounty land, all my wearing apparrel, household furniture, gold beads, earrings and jewels; whatever the amount may be after paying my funeral expenses by the said Stephen Oatley or Joseph Phelon of Granville, the Executor of my will."

(Note: It has been discovered through additional research that Stephen and Mary Oatley were related to Mary Knox's son Eli's wife, Harriet Carpenter. Harriet's mother is Betsey Oatley. Stephen Oatley and Betsey Oatley are siblings. Stephen Oatley's family cared for Mary in her last years, she died a pauper. Stephen Oatley never was granted any of the above items. Town of Blandford only granted funeral expenses.)
