Biography

Ephraim Fuller was born on 3 Mar 1752 in Cornwall, Litchfield, Connecticut to parents Aaron Fuller and Ruth Sawyer. He married Margaret ___ in Connecticut. Children: Ephraim. He died about 1835 in Athens, Crawford, Pennsylvania.

From A History of Cornwall, Connecticut: "Aaron Fuller, m. Ruth ___, Children: Ephraem, b. 3 Mar 1752."

From [1]:

"Ephraim Fuller of Whitehall, Washington Co., N. Y., and Athens, Crawford Co., Penna. The exact relationship of this Ephraim to the other Whitehall Fullers is doubtful; he could have been the Ephraim born 3 March 1752 in Cornwall, Conn., a son of Aaron and Ruth (Sawyer) Fuller, which would make him the brother of Aaron, Henry, Judah, etc. Or he could have been Ephraim, the son of Aaron Fuller Jr. of Whitehall. Probably he was the Ephraim born in 1752. The 1790 census of Whitehall lists an Ephraim with 1 male over 16, 2 under 16, 4 females. In 1800 and 1810 Ephraim is listed as "over 45"; his wife in 1800 was age 26-45, in 1810 she was over 45. Ephraim was a grantee of Fort Ann-New Sheffield and Southhaven in 1781, being a resident of Skenesborough (Whitehall). He bought 50 acres of forfeited land in 1785. An Ephraim was residing in Skenesborough as early as 1773, and an Ephraim was a lieutenant in Co. No. 5 Washington Co militia in 1786 (resigned 1787). He was an overseer of the poor in 1782, and he appeared on the payroll for the Skenesborough company in 1781.

Census records indicate that Ephraim's family included ten children, but only seven are known by name. Perhaps two Ephraims were involved in the census listing, perhaps not. The seven known children:

1. Bartlett (see), born as early as 1780 but possibly somewhat later. Wife Elizabeth. Of Crawford Co., Penna.

2. Ruth, born 25 June 1789, died 27 Oct. 1857. Mar. 1805 to Ira Higby. Bur. Baker, Townville, Crawford Co., Penna.

3. Thankful, mar. John Smith.

4. Freelove, mar. William Scott.

5. Margaret, died 28 Nov. 1878 age 78-8-7. Mar. Luther Merchant. They lived earlier in Allegany Co., N.Y. , moving to Riceville, Crawford Co., Penna. in 1830. Luther died in 1865.

6. Daniel, who accompanied his father to Penna. and in a deed of 1833 was referred to as a "lunatic."

7. Ephraim Jr., who also lived in Athens and was mentioned in early deeds. Possibly Thomas, who received land from Ephraim Jr. in 1838--both of Athens.

Ephraim's wife was Margaret. In 1820, they sold 50 acres in Whitehall for $750; both signed by mark. In 1819, they were involved in a mortgage transaction in Whitehall. Ref 49 (History of Crawford County) says, 'Ephraim Fuller came, an aged man, and resided until his death, with his son-in-law, Luther Merchant [see above], who dwelt in the northeast part of the township (Athens) on tract 1689.' He died about 1835, as a deed of January 1836 refers to him as deceased, and he was alive in 1833. the old Merchant home in Athens was still standing in 1954 (Matt Merchant's old farm and home, atop Merchants Hill, about 1&1/2 or so west of the junction of State 77 and 8 in Riceville, on the south side of Highway 77). Across the street, beneath an ancient, almost dead tree, is an old grave marked by a weathered flag but no headstone. Tradition has it that a soldier of the revolution is buried there, and very possibly it is Ephraim. (Ref 22 Vo. 4 pt 2 pp 665-9, 611, 641, 708, 815, 818, 981, 1007. 28 Vol. 5 Censuses of 1790, 1800, 1810 (Whitehall). Barbour Vital Records of Cornwall (Conn State Library) . Holden's Whitehall Sketches, No. 67, 62, 28. Washington Co. Deeds Vol O 236, Mortgage Bk. N 280. Ref. 49 p. 499. 64 p. 262, 345. Deeds, Crawford Co., Penna.)

Ephraim Fuller, farm laborer of Venango Crawford Co., Pa. Age 50 in 1860. Probably son of Ephraim, above. The following, listed separately in Venango, may have been his children: Almon, farmer, age 25 born Pa. Marily, age 17, born Pa. Salome, age 19. Hanna. (Ref: Census 1860 CrawfordCo.)"

See 1850 Census Athens, Crawford Co., PA below for (Dwelling # 2285; Family #2310) Luther Merchant, age 61, wife Margaret (Fuller), age 50, son Luther age 20, son Alven (sp) age 16, son Matthew 8.

Emphraim was born in 1752. He passed away about 1835.
