Biography

Toliver Gallion (aka Galyean) was born on 13 Jul 1823 in Surry Co, NC.[1] He was the son of Shadrick Noah Gallion (1801-1877) and Mahaley (Rector) Gallion (1801-1846). He was presumably named in honor of his paternal grandmother, Mary Molly Toliver (1768-1850).

Toliver is believed to have married Edna Ruth Davis (1827-1905) on 16 Jul 1843 in Grayson Co VA. Their children are believed to include:

  • Seraphina Olive (Gallion) Lowe (1844-1904)
  • Leander Shadrick "Lee" Gallion (1849-1936)
  • Toliver Gallion (1850-1853/5) - child; sources differ on death date
  • Andrew Gallion (1850-1925)
  • Julinae Gallion (1851-1874) - F; dnm
  • James Chapman Gallion (1855-1855) - infant
  • Enoch Toliver Gallion (1856-1939)
  • William Floyd Gallion (aka Galyen; 1858-1886)
  • James Preston Gallion (1861-1881)
  • William Alexander Gallion (1863-1887)
  • Byram Mitchell Gallion (1864-1886)
  • Evaline Cordelia (Gallion) Wilson (1868-1904)
  • Susan Melvina Gallion (1870-1878) - child

1850 US Federal Census[2]: Toliver Gallion was 25 and born in NC. He's listed with his wife, Edna (age 23; born VA), two children Seraphina and Leander (both born VA), and his wife's sister Amanda Davis (born VA), living in District 19, Grayson Co, VA. The FamilySearch website currently (Jul 2021) has transcription errors in some of the birth states, but Ancestry and the image show the proper locations.

FamilySearch shows records with different death dates for their son, Toliver - 1853 or 1855. In either case, he died as a young child.

1860 US Federal Census[3]: "Toliver Gallion" was 6yo (should be 36), born in NC, and living in Greenville, Grayson Co, VA with his wife "Edney Gallion", children "Surphina, Sea (Lee), Andrew, Julinae, Enoch, and Floyd." Also in the household were Nancy F Morgan (age 32) and (presumably her daughter) Emily Morgan (age 2). Morgan is presumably a married name, and Nancy is probably related in some way to Toliver or Edna.

Confederate Military Service: Toliver enlisted in the Sixty-third Infantry (McMahon's Regiment) in 1863.[4]

1870 US Federal Census[5]: "Toliver Galycon" was listed as age 49 and born in VA; both are incorrect. He was living in Old Town, Grayson Co, VA with his wife, Edney (age 47; born in VA), and 7 children.
