Biography

Obed was born the 19th of the 10th month of 1786. His parents were William Gardner [[Gardner-7993] and Susanna Gardner Gardner-7994. ^[1]

Obed Gardner and Priscilla Macy were married previous to December 3, 1810. This is the date there was a complaint made concerning Obed's marriage contrary to the discipline of Friends.

Friends Meeting complaint against Obed Gardner

Deep River Friends Meeting registered a complaint against Obed Gardner on December 3, 1810 for "accomplishing his marriage contrary to discipline". The following is my best attempt at transcription: "Deep River Preparative Meeting complains Obed Gardner for accomplishing his marriage contrary to discipline and this meeting disowns him from being a member thereoff David Beard is appointed to inform him of the meeting's proceedings against him and that he may have a copy of this minute by applying to the clerk."

NOTE:This specifies hat he married "contrary to discipline", yet I have seen reference to his marring "out of unity". More research is needed to clarify this situation.

Obed Gardner married Sarah Conally in 1827, bond date February 3, 1828.

Death

Obed Gardner, farmer, died of fever in February of 1850.

NOTE: Although this says there was a marriage on December 3, 1810, I believe the person who reported this did not read the meeting records carefully, as this is the date there was a complaint against Obed for "marrying contrary to discipline". I suspect the real problem lies in the person reporting this action not being familiar with Quaker terminology.

I report this only because someone may see this record without seeing the actual meeting record and assume he was married in meeting on that date. If you will read the actual meeting record this refers to you will see the mistake.
