Although best known as the home of John L. Collins, Beech Hill, which is located off Route 700 near the waters of the North Anna River, belonged to the Garland family in the early days of the county. When Nathaniel Garland died in 1783, he left his estate, which consisted of 350 acres of land and two houses, to his wife, Elizabeth, for life. In accordance with a further provision of his Will, when his widow died in 1809, the estate was equally divided between two of their sons, Nathaniel, Jr. and Edward. In 1810, Edward sold his share, 173 acres and one of the houses, to John L. Collins.
