John Garner II was a Virginia colonist.

John Garner is named in his father, John Garner's will (dated 22 Jan 1702, proved 26 May 1702, citing Westmoreland Deeds & Wills, B 3, p. 153+).[1] One moiety of 800+ acres was given to be divided between him and his brother, Henry Garner. Brothers Vincent, Thomas, Parish, Benjamin, James and sisters Mary, Martha and his surviving mother, Susan were also named in the will.

At least one record[2] suggests that John Garner came to Northumberland County Virginia as early as 1637; however, more likely that is the date that his father appears to have arrived. Note also that the immigration record lists two John Garners. The narrative of Ritchie & Wood (1952) suggests 1650 as the arrival date, although this might just have been the date when Lewis Burwell received a land grant (for a total of 32 passengers).[1]

A later land transaction [one of many, well-described by Ritchie & Wood (1952)], provides further confirmation that John was a Jr:

20 Jun 1663, "Joseph Fielding and John Garner, both of Northumberland County in Virginia, transfer and assign all our rights, titles and interest in the 500 acres of land" which had been transferred to them by Francis Roberts, to John Garner Jr, son of John Garner, and to John Bailes Jr, son of John Bailes deceased. (North. R. B. 15, p. 100.)[1]

John Garner married Jane Joyce, daughter of Abraham Joyce;[1][3] had issue:[1]

  1. William
  2. Abraham
  3. John III
  4. Joseph
  5. Jeremiah
  6. Jane Joyce (Garner) Self
  7. Susanna (Garner) Moon

In 1710, John Garner deeded 50 acres of land to his son, John, "Being one-half part of 100 acres devised and bequeathed unto my wife Jane, the daughter of Abraham Joyce, deceased, by her Father. This land was surveyed in 1708 at which time there was 17 acres surplus which was given to Jane Garner my wife, land in Westmoreland adjoining Thomas Miller." (West. D. & W. B. 4, p. 99.)[1]

John Garner's will is recorded in Westmoreland County, Virginia 3 Feb 1712, and proved 25 Mar 1713.[4][1]

  • John left one Negroe (sic) woman called Cate to his wife during his widdowhood, and to his son William should Jane remarry.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
