Biography

James was born in Walton, Ipswich, Suffolk England in 1819.

He joined the 12th Foot Regiment on 3 May 1837, his occupation on joining was a labourer.

He married his first wife Eliza in Newry Down, Northern Island on 16 February 1853.

They came out to Australia in 1855 and settled in Tasmania, James occupation at this time was an Office Keeper with the Commissariat until 1869.

His first wife passed away and he remarried on the 2 March 1863 to Ann in Hobart, Tasmania.

In 1871 his occupation is listed as constable (on his second last child’s birth record).

In 1873 his occupation listed on his last child’s birth record as Attendant of the Insane.

He passed away on 23 August 1887, in Hobart Tasmania and was buried in a public grave at Cornelian Bay Cemetery
