There are often many different spellings for names in the early days of recorded history. On WikiTree we try to use the earliest best spelling. Often the spellings change from generation to generation which can cause confusion. However, the guidelines for what last name to use for a profile on WikiTree is copied below:
Spelling conventions
It's common with earlier ancestors that the spelling of a name was not standardized.
Nevertheless, if there are any contemporary written documents, the spelling from those documents should be used. In particular, the spelling that appears in a birth record should be used for the Last Name at Birth unless there are other documents from at or near the time of birth that inform us about a more common or correct spelling.
The spelling used by descendants is not relevant unless there are no contemporary written documents.

You can find this information here: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Name_Fields The 1800 US Census for John Garretson spells his name this way, as does the birth record in the Quaker records listed in Source #1. This is the best information concurrent with his life that gives his spelling. That overrides what is used on DAR records. I hope this answers your concern.

Thank you for the explanation. I have no concern, but only wish to inform researchers of another spelling of the name which does show an important source for the family if they were not aware of the military service. It also helps to know the spelling if a direct descendant wishes to apply to the DAR for membership under the name in their files.
