Elizabeth Greenwood Garrett, was born in 1795, a daughter of William Garrett and Elizabeth Taylor. On February 8, 1815, in Essex county, Virgnia, Elizabeth married Smallwood Atwell Coghill, the youngest son of John Coghill, born circa 1764 and Anne "Nancy" Wise. [1]
Elizabeth and Smallwood became the parents of ten children, all but one surviving both parents:
Martha Smith Coghill, born January 2, 1816, married late in life to George Edmonston
James Henry Coghill, born September 25, 1817, married 1) Sarah P. Eastman, a daughter of J.S. Eastman, Esq. of Baltimore on July 1, 1847. Sarah died March 13, 1849, at the age of twenty, and James Henry married 2) Mary Mulford, a daughter of James Hervey Mulford, Esq. and Rebecca Gorham. He had two children by each marriage
Nancy Coghill, died young
Lawrence Atwell Coghill, born March 12, 1821, married Ann Elizabeth Shaddock of Caroline county, Virginia. They had eight children

William Newton Coghill, born May 10, 1826, in Essex county, Virginia, died May 24, 1869, in San Francisco, California, married Elizabeth J. "Lizzie" Beck, from Kentucky [2] After William's death, his widow married Reverend John Hemphill
Andrew Jackson Coghill, born November 3, 1828, in Lloyds, Essex county, Virginia, died July 4, 1901, in Oakland, Alameda county, California, married Rosina Gummer [3]
Mildred Jane Coghill, born November 20, 1832, married Charles F. Bayliss
Elizabeth Ann Coghill, born October 20, 1834, died July 1, 1875, in Old Church, Hanover county, Virginia, married Silas P. Bayliss
Thomas Benton Coghill, born May 31, 1836, died February 4, 1914, in Alemada county, California, married Catherine Elizabeth "Kate" Stanley, a daughter of Judge J.A. Stanely, of San Francisco (originally from North Carolina) [4]
Elizabeth Greenwood (Garrett) Coghill died December 13, 1849. Smallwood Atwell Coghill died August 8, 1853.
