Biography

Nancy was born in April 1830 to Stephen Garrett and Sarah Catherine Perry. She married Edward P Norman. They had 8 children. [1][2]

Edward was conscripted into the Confederate army in 1861. In 1862 Nancy found herself and her children in desperate circumstances . She wrote to her husband that she and the children were starving. Edward was near home and went to see about his family. When he returned to his unit this "french leave" was seen as desertion by his commanding officer and he was convicted. After Edward was shot as a deserter in December 1862, Nancy was left alone with their 8 minor children on their farm in Tennessee. Between 1864 and 1874 Nancy gave birth to 3 children who were probably all fathered by her neighbor William T. Brumbalow - Thomas Henry, Simon and Sarah Ann. [3][4] DNA evidence indicates he was the father of her son Thomas Henry Norman. In 1891 when she applied for Edward's state confederate pension Nancy declared that she had not remarried after his death. [5]

Widows Confederation Pension Application

William Brumbalow's eldest daughter, Jane Elizabeth, married a close relative of Edward Norman, Stephen Norman, in 1868. So we can be confident the families knew each other.

Toward the end of her life Nancy lived with her sister[6] and then with her son James P in Blount county, Alabama. [7] She died 24 May 1912 and was buried in Etowah county, Alabama.
