In the 1840 census of Hot Springs County, Arkansas, there was a listing for William Cooper living next door to a Nancy Garrett. Nancy was probably the mother of Mariah and William was Mariah's husband. Their marriage was recorded in Pulaski County in 1839.
A descendant of Mariah, a Doctor Cooper, recalls a story his father told him about Mariah's brother, Spills, coming to visit them one time riding on a donkey.
Mariah is listed as a widow in this census.
A 25 year old farm laborer (m.) born in AL is living with them: Marion Parker.
