Biography

"Garrett. — Stephen Garrett, a Frenchman, settled in Buckingham county, Va. His children were — Stephen, John, David, Elijah, William, Mary, and Elizabeth. William married Mary Coleman, of Virginia, by whom he had — Spillsberry, James, William B., Stephen, Reuben, John, Elijah, Coleman, Magdalene, Lucy, and Mary...[1]

Magdaline's name has been spelled Magdalene on some websites. Original documents are needed to verify accurate spelling.

Some family trees show her birth place to be in Warm Springs, Buncombe County, North Carolina.[2] Why would the family have one child born in North Carolina and all others born in Virginia? Not only that, she was married in Buncombe and died in Buncombe County. It appears she lived her whole life in Buncombe County yet her 'siblings' lived in Buckingham County, Virginia. Documentation is needed to prove she was a daughter of William and Mary (Coleman) Garrett.

Magdalene 'Maggie' Garrett married 5 Mar 1806 in Asheville, Buncombe County, North Carolina to William Lusk. Another source said she married May 5, 1807..[2] Original marriage record needs to be studied.

"Mary Magdaline Garrett's father, William Garrett, ran a stage coach service in Warm Springs."[3]

Did William Garretts route run from Buckingham County, Virginia to Buncombe County, North Carolina? That was quite a long route. This doesn't add up.

"William-July 14, 1781, On a prospecting tour to Dutch Bottoms, TN, William met and married Mary Magdaline Garrett-May 13, 1790--April 23, 1847. They moved to the Irish Bottoms in the State of Tennessee, then in 1813 to the Flats of Spring Creek, NC and purchased 300 acres in 1813. Spring Creek was then in Buncombe Co, and was until 1851, when it became Madison Co. To this union were born 10 children. Some reports have 11 children. (John Weldon Owen)[3]

Dutch Bottoms, Tennessee is in Cocke County and borders Madison to the west so at least this part of the narrative is making sense.
