1785 - Birth of James Gaston. September 12, 1785. Pennsylvania, USA. The name of his mother is unknown at this time. [1]

March 1, 1811 - Marriage in Pennsylvania, USA. James and Susannah (Reneau) Gaston (1795-1851) Reneau-62 | were married in Pennsylvania, USA, per Family Group Sheet. They had at least 10 children together. Susannah (Reneau) Gaston died December 18, 1851.

1812 - John Gaston born in Pennsylvania, USA. The census record of 1830 and 1840 confirms birth. Probate Record of William Gaston confirms name and family relationship.

1813 - Mary (Gaston) Rhodes born in Pennsylvania, USA. The census record of 1830 and 1840 confirms birth. Probate Record of William Gaston confirms name and family relationship

Family oral history indicates there were children born between George and Harrison. The 1820 Census shows any born prior to 1820, have not survived. Any born between 1820 and the 1822 birth of Harrison did not survive, as indicated by 1830 Census.

1822 - Harrison "Harris" Gaston born in Belmont County, Ohio on May 19, 1822. His wife, Margaret Echols Gaston and author of the Family Group Sheet knew his parents and recorded his birthday and birthplace. Census records of 1830 and 1840 confirm birth.

1824 - Jane (Gaston) Bennett born in Ohio, USA. Census records of 1830 and 1840 confirm birth. Probate Record of William Gaston confirms name and family relationship.

C… Gaston named on grave marker in Williams – Gaston Cemetery, Green Township, Monroe County, Ohio. Sandstone Grave Marker is broken. Believed to be son born between 1826 and 1828 according to Census record of 1830 confirming birth. Date of death is unknown but is prior to 1840 census.

Observations: The span between Sarah and Jane's births indicates the unidentified son was born between them (1826-1828). The son, John (b. 1812) is on his own in 1830 so is not include in the household of James and Susannah Gaston.

1832 - Susan Gaston born on February 22, 1832 Ohio, USA. She died August 27, 1848. Grave marker located in Williams-Gaston Cemetery in Green Township, Monroe County, Ohio shows date of death and exact age at death, the birthday is calculated from this. Birth is confirmed in 1840 census record.

James Gaston born between 1833 and 1835 as recorded in 1840 census record. Death of James Gaston is recorded in a Listing of Epidemic Deaths that occurred in Owen County maintained at the Indiana State Library. Cause of death is listed as Typhoid in October 1850 in Montgomery Township, Owen County, Indiana.

1836 - William Gaston born in Indiana, USA. Birth is confirmed in 1840, 1850 and 1860 census records and the birth year can be surmised from the 1850 census record. He died during the Civil War. Petition for probate of his estate was filed February 2. 1866. Family history indicates his body was not recovered by the family and his burial place is unconfirmed.

1837 - Ellenor (Gaston) William born in Indiana, USA. Birth is confirmed in 1840 and 1850 census records and the birth year can be surmised from the 1850 census record. Probate Record of William Gaston confirms name and family relationship.

1840 Census Record[4]Shows James and Susannah Gaston living in Green Township, Monroe, Ohio, George Gaston Family in Green Township, Monroe, Ohio and John Gaston living in Salem Township, Monroe, Ohio. 3 Children are enumerated in the household of James and Susannah Gaston that are not identified in the Probate record of William Gaston.[5]

1849 - Sale of 80 Acres of land by James and Susannah to John Boughner in Marietta, Monroe, Ohio.[6]

1850 Census Record[7] Shows James and Susannah in Montgomery Township, Owen, Indiana with Sarah, William and Ellenor in their household. The record contains the age of household members and the birthplaces of the 3 children.

January 1, 1851 – Marriage of Harrison Gaston and Margaret Jane Echols (Eckles) in Monroe County, Ohio per Family Group Sheet.

On July 25, 1852, seven months following Susannah's death, James executed a deed in Owen County to Harrison Gaston of Monroe County, Ohio. (Owen County, Indiana Book of Deeds page 591: recorded April 15, 1855) James Gaston to Harris Gaston in consideration for the sum of $300 to me paid by Harris Gaston of Monroe County, Ohio do give, grant, bargain, sell in fee simple the following tracts of land, the SE qtr of the NE qtr of section 35 in township 11, North range 4 West and also the E1/2 of the NE 1/4 of the NE qtr of section 35 in township 11, N of range 4 W containing 60 acres more or less

1854 - Marriage Certificate was issued to James Gaston and Lydia Dixon, a widow, in Montgomery Township, Owen, Indiana.[8] James had no children from his second marriage.

1860 Census Record[9] of Montgomery Township, Owen County, Indiana enumerates the household of James and Lydia Gaston. James is a farmer with a real estate value of $1300 and personal estate as $500. William, the youngest son of James and Susannah, resides with them. 1861 – Death of James Gaston in Owen County, Indiana. Probate records indicate James died April 9, 1861. Lydia Gaston continued to reside in Owen County, Indiana, so it can be surmised his burial is there, but the gravesite location has been lost to the ravages of time.[10]

1862 - Lydia Gaston, the widow of James, and Jacob Pool were issued a marriage license in Owen County, Indiana on August 26, 1862.

1866 - Probate Record Owen County Indiana Vol 4-1 1 Jan 1866 - 1 May 1871. Probate records of William Gaston, son of James and Susannah, their other living children and two granddaughters are identified. Filed for petition 2 Feb. 1866.

January 31, 1866 Probate record: "Ann Gaston, Levina Gaston, John Gaston, Mary Rhodes, John Rhodes, Joseph H. Bennett, Jane Bennett, Ellenor Williams and John B. Williams are nonresidents of the State of Indiana. Appraisal showed the lands were not susceptible of partitions and ordered to be sold. The described land sold for sum or $675 on May 4, 1871.
Observations: One obvious difference in this listing is the name Jane Bennett versus June Bennett in the previous record. Further research verifies the correct first name is Jane.

1870 Census record of Owen County, Indiana enumerates the household of Jacob and Lydia Pool.

The Original is in possession of family descendants. The author knew her in-laws personally and this is a valid source. From young adulthood, Margaret lived in Monroe County, Ohio, where James and Susannah Gaston had previously resided. When James and Susannah removed to Owen County, Indiana, Margaret and her husband, Harris Gaston, followed.

    Observations: Four children have been born since 1830. The unidentified daughter and son in the 5-10 age group births were not included in 1830 which indicates they were born after 1830. Their births occurred in the 6 years between Sarah and William. Other research of census show James and Susannah's children, Mary and George, have married so are not included in their household in 1840.
  6. A February 2, 1849 deed for 80 acres was conveyed by James and Susannah Gaston of Monroe County to John Boughner. The deed reads "situated in County of Monroe, State of Ohio, and in the district of land heretofore subject to sale at Marietta, Ohio, described as follows the west half of the South east quarter of section 16, Township 3 Range 4" (Deed Vol 12 page 127 - Monroe County Ohio)

  10. Administration of probate was first filed on April 24, 1861 in Owen County Indiana Probate Court by Lydia Gaston. In her statement she states, "James Gaston departed this life intestate in said county on April 9, 1861 she states his estate to be administered of the probable value of about $300." Lydia was appointed administrix and John Secrest administrator. A lengthy estate inventory valued at $577.61 was submitted to the Owen County court on July 9, 1862. John Secrest, administrator stated he paid $223.61 to widow and relieving (as administrix) "the said widow having married ' David Pool,' October 9, 1862." In filing the Final report (July 6, 1863) the administrator states the inventory included items that belonged to John Gaston that totaled in the amount of $349.50
