Biography

1776 Project
Captain William Gatewood served with Essex County Militia, Virginia Militia during the American Revolution.

William Gatewood is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A043605.

William Gatewood was first married to Jane Travers.

He was married 25 August 1799 in Bath County, Virginia to Jane Warwick.[1][2] Their home was at Mountain Grove, Bath County, Virginia.[2] In 1811, William Gatewood acquired the property known as Mountain Grove from Benjamin Vance, a son of Samuel Vance. In 1839, Samuel V. Gatewood acquired the property from Jane (Warwick) Gatewood, and he built a home there in 1855.

William Gatewood of Essex County, Virginia was a relative of President Tyler. [2]

Property

In 1809, Jacob Warwick sold William Gatewood 2 tracts of adjoining land, one tract containing 171 acres, located on the north fork of Jackson's river, known as Back Creek, in Bath County, Virginia.[3]

In 1811, William and Jane Gatewood purchased property from Benjamin Vance. The first tract contained 191 acres on the Little Back Creek. The second tract contains 47 acres on the Little Back Creek.[4]

In 1813, Joseph Smith sold to William Gatewood 100 acres on both sides of Back Creek in Bath County, Virginia.[5]

In 1819, property surveyed for William Gatewood and John Baxter, 120 acres in Bath County, Virginia[6]

In 1820, property surveyed, 150 acres on Cochrane Creek Bath County, Virginia[7]

In Jan 1821, property surveyed for William Gatewood and John Baxter, 150 acres both sides of Cochrane Creek, Bath County, Virginia.[8]

In 1824, William and his wife Jane gave 3 tracts of property to son Warwick Gatewood, first tract contained 171 acres, the second tract contained 94 acres, the third tract containing 90 acres.[9]

In 1839, wife Jane Gatewood transferred the Benjamin Vance property to son Samuel V. Gatewood. The property consisted of 3 tracts of land, 193 acres, 47 acres, and 150 acres.[10]

Last Will

William Gatewood's Last Will was signed 7 June 1825 in Essex County, Virginia.[11]

William's estate inventory in February 1826 listed 28 enslaved persons.[12]

Slaves
