Biography

He was born in 1776 in Sumter County, SC to John Gaulden and Susannah Broomfield.

"He was a Baptist minister. He moved to Brooks county, Georgia about nine miles northwest of Quitman. His home was called Okapilco. He married Rhoda Paisley, daughter of John Paisley of Savannah, Georgia...They had seven children, viz.: Julis, john P., Charles Scriven, Albert J., Brantley Z., William B and Cornelis." ^[1]

From a Memorial Stone erected in 1855: "To the memory of Rev. Jonathan Gaulden and Mrs. Rhoda Gaulden his wife and their deceased children. The survivors at this time August 1855 are John P. Gaulden, Charles S. Gaulden, William B. Gaulden (below), Brantley G. Gaulden and Cornelia L., the wife of William S. Dilworth. The Rev. Jonathan Gaulden, born on the High Hills of Santee, in Sumter Distirct of SC in 1776, and died June 5th 1853. In his 77th year. For near 50 years he was a member of the Baptist Church. He ever remembered the poor." [2]
