Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
John Gaulding was a Virginia colonist.
This profile is part of the Gaulding Name Study.

John was born about 1665 to 1670. His parents are unknown and his heritage is a guess, though his male-line descendants place him as Northwestern European with Haplogroup R-FTC46410. This latest NGS test places John in the area of Manchester England at some point close to his birth.

Most colonial records in New Kent County were destroyed in a fire, "...15 July 1787. During the Civil War some records were destroyed in 1862. The surviving records were moved to Richmond for safekeeping, but were destroyed by the fire of 3 April 1865." Family Search Wiki [1] This is a huge hindrance in researching this John Gaulding further.

Fortunately, he does appear in the New Kent County, Virginia St. Peter's Parish Vestry Book and Register, 1684-1786, The Vestry Book and Register of St Peters Parish 1684-1786, Chamberlayne, C.G., ed.. The Vestry Book and Register of St. Peter's Parish New Kent and James City Counties, Virginia 1684-1786. Richmond, VA, USA: Library Board, 1937. Available on Ancestry

Possible Land

From Prince Edward County In The French War [3]

This land mention may be for John Gaulding of New Kent or one of his sons or grandsons. The boundary lines for this area shifted over time with parts of one county falling into another. This information is given to show the name in a published document as Gaulding. "Little Buffalo Creek is a 21.1-mile-long tributary of the Appomattox River in the U.S. state of Virginia. Flowing entirely through Prince Edward County, it joins the Appomattox River at Farmville".Map The family is rumoured to have ties to land around and part of Hampton Sydney College - this creek runs through the campus.

DNA Haplogroup R-FTC46410

There are currently 21 auDNA and YDNA matches to John's son Samuel, 1732 and John, Jr's's sons William, 1727, John III, 1735 and Jesse, 1750. Research and testing continues. NGS DNA testing has proven there is no connection to the Golden/Goulding/Golding families.

Research Notes

Gaulding Research Notes

Disputed Parentage

Thomas Gaulding as father: John Goulding was born in England OR New Kent County Virginia. He and his link to Thomas Gaulding as a father is a debated question between researchers.

James Gaulding as father: Another theory is John's father was James Gaulding with brothers, Edward, William and Samuel. "John, William & Edward Goulding are on the 1704 Essex Co, VA Quit Rent Rolls. John Gaulding SR later moves over into neighboring New Kent County & eventually to Amelia / Prince Edward Co, VA." [1]

The Rev. William Golding as grandfather: Rev. Gaulding had a son named John. It is believed that the reverend passed away in 1648 and his son John became adopted by the Ripley family, also of Hingham. The Ripleys were wealthy and decided to start a plantation in Virginia and one of the Ripley sons went to Virginia in 1651 to start the town of Gloucester and to settle a plantation which he did. His sister Elizabeth came with him as did John Golding. John's adoption is believed to have been in the form of an indenture (very common; orphans were routinely indentured; even orphaned babies were) until he reached age 21. John Golding would marry Elizabeth Ripley in 1658 and that is believed to be the start of the Golding family in Virginia and much of the American South."[4]

On the site, Golden Genealogy.com Bill Golden lists all of the immigrants to America with the Golding/Gaulding names. Is there a Ripley connection? Makes for some interesting reading. What is the answer?

Gaulding's of the Bahama Islands

"The History of Eleuthera, Bahamas:

In 1646, Capt. William Sayle, an ex-governor of Bermuda, formed a company of four directors to settle the island under the name of "The Company of Adventures for the Plantation of the Island of Eleuthera" or "Eleuthera" being the short name.

Eleuthera is the Greek word for freedom. Eleuthera was to be a republic with freedom of religion allowed.

Among the four directors was the minister Rev. Willliam Golding, a former Anglican reverend who bolted the church to become a Puritan minister. The Rev William Golding lived in the islands for several years before moving to a larger congregation in Hingham, Massachusetts.

In 1670, all of the islands in the area were consolidated by the Crown and made part of Carolina. It was at this time that the name Bahamas came into general usage.

Glad to have found the cousin connection! Hope to see my name in the DNA section tomorrow (just connected, so a 24-hour delay for DNA info to update).

Cheers, Liz
